The History of Sysane
The History of Sysane, The Terror of Urik.
Harrick Sysane began his life in the twilight of the Green Age as a bard of rare talent and darker talents still. Though known publicly as a performer, he secretly served as an assassin, traveling the lands with a troupe of three other bards whose exploits earned them the infamous name the Minstrels Four. Their performances dazzled nobles, merchants, and warlords alike, while their hidden contracts quietly reshaped the politics of the age.
After years of success and a fortune earned in both coin and secrets, Harrick retired from the life of shadows. A grateful and influential patron granted him the title of Lord and a tract of land outside the prosperous city of Bodach. It was there that Harrick found something he had never expected, peace: he met a woman who would become his wife, and together they had a son. For a time, the former assassin allowed himself to believe his nefarious past was truly behind him.
That illusion was shattered when marauding giants descended upon the region. Harrick’s wife was killed in the attacks, leaving him to raise their son alone. The boy grew up hardened by loss, and despite Harrick’s desperate protests, eventually enlisted in the legions of the Ravager of Giants - seeking vengeance where his father sought only to forget.
Tragedy struck again when Bodach came under siege by the Left Hand of Rajaat, Irikos. As the city braced for the oncoming assault, Harrick took up the tools of his old trade, slipping through the chaos to assassinate several of Irikos’ generals. His efforts helped to slow the warlord’s advance but could not halt it. Eventually captured and brought before Irikos, Harrick’s skills impressed the Left Hand enough that he stayed his execution. Instead, he twisted him, using terrible magic to transform him into a Gray Stalker, bound to serve him in undeath.
Harrick carried out Irikos’ will for what felt like an eternity, a puppet of the Left Hand; only when Irikos fell and Bodach was annihilated were Sysane’s chains finally broken. Free but cursed, he sought his son, only to find no trace - no records, no rumors, not even a grave.
Centuries passed. The magic sustaining his undead state began to wane, and Harrick felt the pull of final death creeping ever closer. Refusing to pass on without learning his son’s fate, he continued wandering the wastes until his failing strength brought him to the gates of Urik. There, weakened and unable to hide his nature, he was seized by templars and brought before Hamanu, the Lion of Urik.
Hamanu, drawing upon both sorcery and the Way, unraveled the long and tragic history of Harrick Sysane. Yet instead of destroying him, the sorcerer‑king offered a bargain. He would stabilize the fading magic that kept the gray stalker tethered to the world - preserving his existence until he uncovered the fate of his lost son - on a single condition: he would serve Urik with absolute loyalty. Not as a mindless thrall, but as a weapon honed by centuries of loss, skill, and purpose.
Harrick accepted without hesitation.
Across the centuries that followed, Sysane became one of Hamanu’s most feared instruments. His relentless efficiency, tireless nature, and cold precision forged a myth whispered across the Tablelands: The Terror of Urik.
Though bound by duty, Sysane still serves Hamanu with unwavering commitment, sharpening his talents in undeath as he once did in life. Yet beneath the terror and the legend, one purpose still burns within him: to discover what became of the son stolen from him by time, war, and the cruelty of Athas.
Appearance
Sysane appears much as he did in life, though undeath unmistakably clings to him. His frame is lean, his height unremarkable, yet his presence unsettles the air around him. A sickly gray pallor stains his skin, as if the color has been drained rather than faded. He wears a tattered beige tunic, its frayed edges whispering with each movement, and he hides his features beneath a hood and tightly wrapped cloth.
From the darkness of that hood, two eyes burn through the shroud—twin points of white‑yellow fire that watch the world with an unblinking intensity.
Personality
Sysane rarely speaks, and when he does, it’s usually no more than a single sentence delivered in a low, raspy tone.
He maintains a cool, steady composure and is slow to anger.
Sysane carries out Hamanu’s commands with icy disdain, driven by a resolve so absolute that nothing - mortal or otherwise - can hope to hinder him.
The only thing that can deter him or pull him away from a task is information concerning his son’s fate.
Combat
Sysane is a formidable combatant with centuries of battle-hardened experience. He relies heavily on his speed and precision, augmenting his strikes with an array of potent poisons and magic. The blades of his dragon’s paw are each coated with a different toxin, allowing him to adapt quickly to his opponent’s weaknesses.
A patient hunter, he prefers to open combat from the shadows, striking before his enemies even realize he is there. Though primarily a melee fighter, Sysane possesses an aptitude for defiling magic and does not hesitate to unleash its destructive power when close‑quarters combat turns against him.
